My Unscripted Journey from a Reality TV Career to My Own Happily Ever After

by Julie LaPlaca

"For fans of reality television and those who like to understand how it’s made, the book is a real treat. It’s also a first-rate memoir—dramatic, passionate, and heartbreakingly honest." —Booklist

A former Bachelor producer flips the script in this vulnerable memoir about her own journey to finding love after her job turned into a real-life rom-com.

Julie LaPlaca spent years crafting some of reality TV’s most iconic and swoon worthy romances, from hot tub heartbreaks to heartfelt proposal speeches. But behind the scenes, her own love life was unraveling. The end of a five-year relationship, one too many bad dates, and months on the road left her wondering if she’d ever get the happy ending she helped curate for others.

Then came the headlines. The tabloids speculated Julie was the love interest of the very Bachelor she was producing. Suddenly, her life mirrored her own creation, as she was pulled into the spotlight, started to question her feelings, and lines became blurred between her and the show’s leading man. She began to wonder: What is real, and what is fantasy?

Once back behind the cameras, a mid-thirties meltdown forced her to reevaluate what is most important in life. In this candid and revealing memoir, she shares the messy fallout of her time as a producer, and her journey to reclaim the script of her love life and become her own leading lady.

The Love Producer explores pop culture’s influence on romance, desire, and the idea of happily ever after. With wit and vulnerability, Julie shares stories of heartbreak, shame, aging, dating, and spiritual transformation. Readers will feel empowered to reimagine the stories we’ve been led to believe, as Julie begins to uncover a love far deeper than what you see on the screen.

“I’ve always thought that the drama that happens in Bachelor Nation off camera is just as juicy as what happens on camera and The Love Producer proves it. This book is brain candy for the pop culture–loving, romantic millennial. Julie wrote the ultimate page-turning chick lit . . . except it’s her true story.”

— Ashley Iaconetti, star of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Rhode Island who found love through The Bachelor franchise

“From my time with Julie I am not surprised that her memoir brings us honesty and humor. Julie invites readers into stories of heartbreak, moments of turmoil, aging, dating, and spiritual renewal all leading to a place of feeling less alone and confident in our journey to love ourselves. A gifted and compassionate storyteller, Julie encourages us to question the narratives we’ve inherited and discover a love far richer and more lasting.”

— Ben Higgins, former star of The Bachelor and author of Alone in Plain Sight

"This book is desperately needed medicine for our hearts, our lives, and our culture. I will read it over and over until its many truths sink into every one of my cells. If you have ever felt the slightest impulse to create anything, I urge you to do the same. Well researched, beautifully written, and powerfully healing, WE NEED YOUR ART is not only a great read, but a manifesto for our personal and collective freedom. Thank you, Amie McNee!"

— Isabelle Engel, author of Most Eligible

“Bachelor Nation, this book is for you. Julie gives readers a front-row seat to the drama, heartbreak, and hope that unfolds as she crafts happily ever afters for television while trying to navigate her own love story. It’s raw, funny, and as relatable as it is entertaining.”

— Kaitlyn Bristowe, former star of The Bachelorette and host of the Off the Vine podcast

“The Love Producer gave me goosebumps from the go—think Renée Zellweger in Jerry Maguire: ‘you had me at hello.’ It’s both relatable and aspirational; hopeful and heartbreaking; easy to read yet emotionally deep. I don’t know any pop culture lovers who won’t instantly melt into these pages. And if you like reality TV, Julie’s stories are pure heaven! But mostly, it’s sweet, charming, and feel-good, all the way, and that’s exactly what we want and need right now.”

— Alyssa Shelasky, author of New York magazine’s Sex Diaries book and column and star of HBO’s Sex Diaries docuseries

“Using the familiar arc of everyone’s favorite dating show, Julie LaPlaca writes the unscripted truth in this gem of a book. Brave, vulnerable, and messy, The Love Producer is a beautiful reminder to become our own permission slip, quiet our inner a**hole, lose shame, and to finally own our story, with all its perfect imperfections.”
